MUSCAT: The National Centre for Statistics and Information on Sunday launched a nationwide public opinion survey to assess the use of artificial intelligence technologies in daily life as part of efforts to monitor digital transformation trends in the Sultanate of Oman.
The survey, which runs until May 28, targets Omani citizens aged 18 and above and seeks to evaluate the extent of AI adoption, levels of trust in AI-generated outputs, perceived benefits and potential risks associated with the technology.
Mahfoudh bin Salem al Musharfi, Director of the Public Opinion Measurement Department at the NCSI, said the survey aims to measure the prevalence of AI usage among members of society and identify patterns of use across different fields, including the frequency and motivations behind adoption.
He explained that the study also examines whether AI tools contribute to improving performance and reducing errors or, conversely, increase inaccuracies in certain applications.
According to al Musharfi, the survey additionally focuses on public concerns surrounding AI, particularly in relation to sensitive topics and the extent to which personal data is incorporated into such technologies. It also evaluates how users verify information and responses generated by AI applications and the degree of confidence they place in those outputs.
He noted that the findings will help policymakers and relevant authorities identify priority areas for regulation and intervention, while also supporting the development of awareness initiatives and training programmes aimed at promoting the safe and effective use of AI technologies.
The results are also expected to contribute to identifying the key skills required by society to adapt to the rapidly evolving digital landscape. — ONA
